Thanksgiving Day fire strikes downtown Boston.

November 28, 1889

A fire at the Brown-Durrell Building at 69 – 87 Bedford Street kills five firefighters: Hosemen John Brooks, Michael Murnan, and Edward Whiting and Laddermen Daniel Buckley and Frank Loker, destroys 60 buildings, and clears the former residential area, which is then rebuilt as a commercial area.
